Where are you from?
My parents are originally from Morocco and I grew up in St-Leonard.
How would you describe your musical style?
I think my sound is pretty spacy. I get inspiration from American trap for my flows and France/Montreal for my slang.
It’s true that you have your own slang that could work really well in Europe for example…Is that something you think about?
The Belgian rapper Hamza inspires me a lot because of his international success. He also got that American flow and he likes to play around with French and English. We don’t need to change the way we speak to blow up, as long as the music is good, people really don’t care. The majority of the streams on my last song St Lau have come from France. I’ve been getting a ton of messages from French listeners telling me how much they love the song even though they don’t even know what St Lau means (rue Saint-Laurent).
What do you like to talk about in your music?
My personal life, my struggles, love and I gotta admit that I talk a lot about drugs [laughs]. I had a period where I was popping percs and even though it’s not glorious, I still like to talk about it in my songs because these are situations that people my age go through. I am a new wave rapper, I don’t talk about gang shit or anything like that, I like to stay humble, everyone got feelings…[laughs].
What’s a typical day in your life?
Honestly, I’m super chill, I’m still in school. I’m taking night classes to study engineering at ETS next year. During the day I work at a primary school so whatever free time I get is when I make music.
Who are you listening to right now?
Hamza, Young Thug, Playboi Carti. I listen to a lot of US Rap, right now I’m listening to a lot of Polo G.
What’s next for you?
I got a bunch of singles coming out and I’m working on a project on the side. I’m mostly excited about doing live shows again. I’m really introverted and anxious, performing on stage really helped me combat my anxiety. I find the crowd energy at shows super inspiring.
